Chapter Seventeen

Dak tried to keep the smile from her face when she saw the rear of CJ’s distinctive, and unmissable, black Ferrari in the back parking lot of the funeral home. She and Hamilton were doing their part of a final perimeter check before the funeral director drove Arnold’s body to the church. The captain had authorized a five-hundred-yard boundary around the church and the same around the cemetery, thanks to the information CJ had shared before they’d toppled into bed the night before for yet another run of hot, sweaty sex that left them both panting.

The police had fenced off the route between the two locations like they would for a parade, and squad cars were positioned at key points along the way. The whole operation was costing the police department a chunk of change, and CJ’s name had been accompanied by an impressive array of curse words. Hamilton gave her an apologetic look every time CJ was mentioned, and Dak had stayed quiet about her current connection with the TV celebrity. She didn’t like that her personal life was lightly entangled with her case, and it was something she’d need to think about.

No one outside the family or not local to the area would be allowed within the safe area so that the family and friends of Wallace Arnold could say their final goodbyes in relative peace. The captain had suggested family and friends only should be allowed in the area, but Dak had pointed out their killer was unlikely to be in that group. She and the rest of the team wanted the opportunity to observe who attended from the local area. She’d said the killer was unlikely to be able to resist the funeral, particularly with the additional furor of press frenzy. Their only suspect, Billy, was unlikely to be there, unless he wanted to taunt them. But somehow, she figured he wanted to stay outside their field of view.

The service was an hour away, so Dak had time to see CJ briefly before she left for the fan event. “I’m going inside to check the surveillance is set up.”

Hamilton grinned and raised his eyebrows. “Say hi to your celebrity for me and tell her I’m looking forward to meeting her.”

“You’re an—”

“Asshole, I know.” Hamilton winked and slapped her on the back. “But I’m your asshole, buddy.”

He’d taken her one-time use of “buddy” to heart, it seemed. Dak let him walk away without retort and headed toward the entrance. A convertible yellow Mustang pulled out of the parking lot and tore down the street, too fast for her to catch the license plate. She opened the door and pressed the bell at reception. It took a minute before CJ came from a side door and greeted her with a smile worth getting up in the morning for.

“Who was that in the Mustang?”

“Someone named Dani. She said she was in the neighborhood and just wanted to drop by and say thank you for my work with the dead.
